Print to virtual printers from Mac OS

Virtual printers are published on the network. To print to a published virtual printer from a Mac OS client computer, you must first add the virtual printer. Before adding the virtual printer, install the printer driver from the User Software DVD or from WebTools.

Add a virtual printer to Mac OS

When you add a virtual printer in Mac OS, you specify settings such as the IP address or DNS name of the Fiery Server, the virtual printer name, and the print connection to use.

Before adding a virtual printer, you must install the printer driver for the Fiery Server.
  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu, and then choose Print & Fax.
  2. Click the "+" button to add a printer.
  3. Click IP or IP Printer in the Printer Browser dialog box.
  4. Select Line Printer Daemon - LPD from the Protocol list, type the IP address or DNS name of the Fiery Server in the Address field, and then type the virtual printer name in the Queue field.
  5. Enter a name for the virtual printer in the Name field.

    If you do not enter a name in the Name field, the virtual printer appears in the printer list as the IP address of the Fiery Server.

  6. Select the printer driver you just installed from the Print Using menu.
  7. Click Add.
  8. Click Continue.

    When you send jobs to the Fiery Server using this printer, the settings for the virtual printer are applied to your job.

Before printing a job, you must update the installable options.

Update installable options and print a job

To print to a virtual printer from a Mac OS computer, you must make sure two-way communication is enabled so any installable options are updated.

  1. Open a file and choose Print from the File menu.
  2. Choose the virtual printer as your printer.
  3. Choose Fiery Features from the drop-down list and select Two-Way Communication. When Two-Way Communication is enabled, the virtual printer will be updated with the options installed on the copier/printer.
  4. Click Print.
