How does the Fiery server decide which output profile to use?
The Fiery server takes a number of factors into account when deciding which output profile to use for a job.
These factors are dependent on the implementation of Substrate Catalog on the Fiery server, which determines how the user will select the media for a job.
- Substrate Catalog must be used for media selection.
- Substrate Catalog is optional for media selection.
- Substrate Catalog is not available for media selection.

Is the Output profile in Job Properties set to the automatic output profile selection?
For automatic profile selection, the Output profile print option in the Color tab of the Job Properties window must be set to Use job defined settings. The option is displayed as Use job defined settings because more settings than the media alone are considered. For example, if Color mode is set for CMYK+, the Color mode might used in addition to the media itself to determine the profile.If a specific output profile is specified, it will be used. Make a specific selection when you are not satisfied by the automatic selection of the Fiery server or when you want to experiment with other profiles.
Is Substrate Catalog used ?
When a Substrate Catalog media is specified in Job Properties, check the Substrate Catalog output profile association. To see the front and back color profiles association, right-click the chosen media in Substrate Catalog and select Edit. If a specific output profile is associated with the media/substrate, that profile will be used.
If the output profile association is set to Server’s default, the third test will be used.
Which output profile is set most closely to the settings for your job?
Check the association between the available output profiles and the job settings. Go to and expand the Output Profiles section.
Print options are dependent on the connected server. For example, the Media type print option is often available but not always.
Options in the Media type column in Profile Manager () typically do not match one-for-one the large number of equivalent job settings.
For instance, Job Properties may offer multiple coated options, while there might be only one output profile setting associated with coated media type. In this case, the output profile associated with coated will be used for all coated media.
To change which output profile will be used by default with a media type, double-click the output profile of your choice, then check the media type this profile is compatible with. A single output profile can be specified for many, or all of the available media settings.
