Preflight

You can use the Preflight feature to check a job before printing, to reduce costly printing errors. Preflight checks the most common areas of error to ensure that a job will print successfully and to the expected quality on the selected printer.

To perform a preflight check, you will require one of the following:
Table 1. External Fiery server
Fiery System Software Package
FS350 Pro and earlier Fiery Graphic Arts Package, Premium Edition
FS400 Pro Fiery Graphic Arts Pro Package
FS500 Pro and later Standard – no optional package required
Table 2. Embedded Fiery server
Fiery System Software Package
FS350 and earlier Not supported
FS400 Fiery Automation Package
FS500 Fiery Automation Package
Note: Preflight does not require any optional package for Fiery system software FS500 Pro and later with Windows for color and black-and-white servers.

Preflight generates a report of errors as well as information about the job, including security settings, page size, and color spaces.

Preflight checking can be enabled in Hot Folders and Virtual Printers as well as in Command WorkStation.

Note: Processed jobs cannot be checked with Preflight.
The following file formats are supported for Preflight:
Fiery server Supported file formats
Windows-based PostScript, PDF, EPS, PPML, Creo VPS, and PDF/VT
Embedded PostScript, PDF, EPS, and Creo VPS
TIFF and PCL file formats are not supported for Preflight.

Preflight can check for the following categories of errors:

  • Fonts - Checks for missing fonts and Courier font substitution.

  • Spot Colors - Checks for missing spot colors. You can add missing spot colors in Command WorkStation Spot Colors.

  • Image Resolution - Checks for image resolution less than a specified value.

  • VDP Resources - Checks for missing VDP resources. You can specify the number of records to check, to prevent a potentially long processing time.

  • Hairlines - Checks for line thickness less than a specified value.

  • Overprint - Checks for overprint.

  • PostScript - Checks for PostScript errors.

You can configure Preflight to specify which categories of errors to check and how errors are reported. Preflight configuration settings can be saved as a preset, which allows you to quickly select a Preflight configuration for a particular job.

Note: If Fiery Preflight Pro is available, you can check a spooled or processed PDF or PDF/VT job in Command WorkStation. For other file types, use Preflight.
