Specialty color mixing and output profiles

Editing with specialty color is offered for all the spot color groups (custom and factory). Editing with specialty color is not supported for substitute color groups.

Keep in mind the following when using specialty color values per output profile:

  • The specialty color values will stay with the specific output profile. For example, when you edit a spot color with silver and change the output profile, silver will not be retained for that profile. Specialty color information is specific to the output profile. If you change the output profile, the specialty color information changes.
  • The Fiery server retains the specialty color information for each output profile and retrieves the specialty color information when the corresponding output profile is selected.
  • You can print spot color swatches that include any specialty color components defined for those spot colors. You can also print spot color variations for spot colors with or without a specialty color component.
  • For a Fiery server that supports one or more licensed specialty colors, you can use one or more specialty colors in a document when the specialty colors are licensed and installed. For example, a printer might support gold, silver, clear, or white as specialty colors. You can process a job with a licensed specialty color without installing the specialty color, but you cannot print the job without the specialty color installed. When you edit a specialty color with Spot Color Editor, all output profiles that have the specialty color enabled will also include the changes.

When a Fiery server supports multiple specialty colors in addition to CMYK, some specialty colors may be restricted to installing only in the first or last specialty color station, to print before or after CMYK, while other specialty colors may be installed in any color station. Specialty colors installed in color stations after CMYK can print over CMYK.

For example, the specialty color white may print first, under CMYK, while the specialty color clear may print over or after CMYK as a clear coating.

Limitations

  • When printing spot color variations that include a specialty color, the specialty color will not be printed.
  • When optimizing spot colors that include a specialty color, the specialty color will not be printed due to the limitations of measurement devices.
